While some American air travel hubs are garnering accolades for their innovative designs and family-centric offerings—such as Portland International’s stunning makeover and Memphis International’s convenient amenities—another major facility faces scrutiny. Dallas/Fort Worth International (DFW), recognized for its vast sprawl, has now also been pinpointed as the U.S. airport grappling with the most frequent flight interruptions, according to recent research.
A comprehensive study conducted by Transfeero, a ground transportation service provider, utilized data from the U.S. Bureau of Transportation Statistics to pinpoint airports with the highest percentage of delayed flights in 2025. Dallas/Fort Worth emerged at the top, reporting that over 25% of its flights encountered delays. Other significant airports following closely in this regard include Denver International, Ronald Reagan Washington National, Miami International, and the world's busiest airport, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International.
The predominant factor contributing to the extensive flight delays at Dallas/Fort Worth is the unpredictable weather. Andrea Platania, a travel specialist from Transfeero, highlighted that major transportation hubs like DFW and Denver are particularly vulnerable to weather disturbances, which can cascade into widespread operational issues. Texas has experienced an unusually warm and wet spring and summer in 2025, with forecasts from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration predicting continued warmer-than-average conditions and an increase in severe weather phenomena, including flash floods and tornadoes, all of which directly impede flight schedules.
While natural events are beyond human control, air travelers possess options to circumvent the challenges posed by frequent delays. One strategy involves minimizing layovers at DFW, even for those who regularly fly with American Airlines, which operates other major hubs in cities such as Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, Phoenix, and Charlotte. Notably, Charlotte boasts an impressive on-time arrival record and provides direct flights to various Caribbean destinations. For those inevitably facing delays in Dallas, engaging in calming activities within airport lounges or even venturing out for a brief excursion to nearby Grapevine—a locale offering exquisite wines and artisan shopping—can transform a frustrating wait into a more pleasant experience.
