Over the past year, the TSA has gradually broadened restrictions on products powered by lithium metal and lithium-ion batteries. This includes a range of items such as portable chargers, electric toothbrushes, and e-cigarettes, all of which present a risk of overheating and ignition. These devices collectively accounted for over 60 reported fire, smoke, or extreme heat events in aviation since the beginning of 2025, closely approaching the 89 incidents recorded in 2024, as documented by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

A recent instance occurred in September when a portable charger emitted smoke on a Japan Airlines flight from Tokyo to Chicago. Similarly, in August, two electronic cigarettes spontaneously began smoking on a United Airlines flight from Newark, New Jersey, to Punta Caucedo, Dominican Republic. These events highlight the persistent risks associated with such devices. In fact, e-cigarettes were identified as the leading cause of lithium-ion related aviation issues in 2024, contributing to nearly 30% of all reported cases that year, according to analysis from UL Standards & Engagement, a safety organization.
