New TSA Regulations for Cordless Hair Styling Tools on Flights

2025-10-01

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has recently implemented revised guidelines concerning cordless hair styling appliances, such as curling irons and hair straighteners. These battery-powered devices are now prohibited from checked baggage. This regulatory shift stems from growing concerns over the fire hazards associated with lithium-based batteries and gas cartridges, which are commonly used in these personal care items. To comply, travelers must now place all cordless styling tools in their carry-on luggage, ensuring that any heating elements are adequately covered and the devices cannot accidentally activate during transit. This measure aims to enhance aviation safety by making potentially flammable items more accessible for crew intervention in case of an emergency, unlike items stowed in cargo holds.

This updated policy is a direct response to an increasing number of aviation safety incidents linked to portable electronic devices. Over the past year, the TSA has gradually broadened restrictions on products powered by lithium metal and lithium-ion batteries. This includes a range of items such as portable chargers, electric toothbrushes, and e-cigarettes, all of which present a risk of overheating and ignition. These devices collectively accounted for over 60 reported fire, smoke, or extreme heat events in aviation since the beginning of 2025, closely approaching the 89 incidents recorded in 2024, as documented by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

A recent instance occurred in September when a portable charger emitted smoke on a Japan Airlines flight from Tokyo to Chicago. Similarly, in August, two electronic cigarettes spontaneously began smoking on a United Airlines flight from Newark, New Jersey, to Punta Caucedo, Dominican Republic. These events highlight the persistent risks associated with such devices. In fact, e-cigarettes were identified as the leading cause of lithium-ion related aviation issues in 2024, contributing to nearly 30% of all reported cases that year, according to analysis from UL Standards & Engagement, a safety organization.

Travelers concerned about navigating these evolving regulations can utilize the TSA's online searchable database, which provides comprehensive information on permissible and prohibited items. A general rule of thumb for cordless devices is: if it's cordless, it belongs in your carry-on bag.

For those still relying on traditional corded styling tools, rest assured that these are generally unaffected by the new rules and remain permissible in both carry-on and checked luggage. However, it is crucial to remember that any spare gas cartridges for butane-powered tools are universally prohibited and will be confiscated regardless of where they are packed. Staying informed about these regulations is essential for a smooth and safe travel experience.
