In the heart of Alabama, where the majestic Appalachian Mountain Range gracefully transitions into rolling foothills, lies Jacksonville, a town celebrated for its stunning landscapes. Though the peaks may be less dramatic than their northern counterparts, the beauty of these verdant hills, alive with lush greenery in spring and summer, and ablaze with autumn hues as temperatures cool, is undeniable. Among the charming towns dotting this scenic region, Jacksonville stands out, earning its local moniker as the 'Gem of the Hills.' Strategically positioned between the bustling metropolises of Atlanta, Georgia, and Birmingham, Alabama, with convenient access to major international airports, Jacksonville offers a tranquil escape without sacrificing accessibility. Far from being a sleepy village, it pulses with the energy of Jacksonville State University, a public institution renowned for its robust athletic and artistic programs, which deeply enrich the town's cultural fabric. Established in 1833, Jacksonville's historic downtown features magnificent architecture and inviting pedestrian paths, always close to peaceful nature trails, exceptional local eateries, and the enthusiastic cheers for the beloved Jax State Gamecocks.
For outdoor enthusiasts, Jacksonville is a paradise. It proudly hosts Alabama's pioneering 'Rails to Trails' initiative, the Chief Ladiga Trail. This impressive 32.5-mile paved pathway stretches from the Georgia border, through Jacksonville, and extends to Anniston, approximately 13 miles southwest. It seamlessly connects with Georgia's Silver Comet Trail, forming one of the longest continuous paved rail trails in the nation. Future plans even include linking the Silver Comet Trail to Atlanta's extensive network via the Atlanta Beltline, further expanding its reach. To the north, the Chief Ladiga Trail meets the Pinhoti Trail, which in turn connects to the iconic Appalachian Trail. Every segment of the Chief Ladiga Trail offers awe-inspiring natural vistas, winding through dense woodlands, serene farmlands, crystal-clear mountain streams, and of course, endless rolling hills. While the Chief Ladiga Trail caters to non-motorized activities, thrill-seekers can head to the Choccolocco Mountain Off-Road Vehicle Park. Its 450 acres of mountainous terrain feature a diverse trail system, accommodating everything from novice riders to those seeking the Southeast's most challenging off-road experiences. Dirt bikes, four-wheel drives, ATVs, and rock crawlers are all welcome. Beyond these dedicated trails, the Alabama region surrounding Jacksonville boasts incredible opportunities for hiking to majestic waterfalls, exploring hidden caves, and enjoying panoramic views. Notably, Jacksonville is just a 45-minute drive north of Cheaha Mountain, Alabama's highest point, nestled within one of America's most distinctive parks, famously known as an 'Island in the Sky.'
The spirit of 'Go Gamecocks!' resonates throughout Jacksonville, as residents enthusiastically support Jacksonville State University's athletic events year-round. The university has celebrated numerous national and conference championships in a variety of sports, including football, baseball, basketball, softball, volleyball, and gymnastics. Regardless of your sporting preference, Jax State provides ample opportunities to engage with the games, fostering a strong sense of community that passionately champions its emerging talents, all within what Jacksonville State University proudly declares as 'the friendliest campus in the South.' In addition to its dynamic sports scene, Jacksonville thrives with a vibrant arts and culture landscape, largely thanks to the university's influence. The Jax State Lyric Theatre consistently stages beloved productions throughout the year, and the university's Shakespeare Project offers free, high-quality performances of classic Shakespearean plays to the public. Currently, a new state-of-the-art performing arts center is under construction, slated to include a grand 1,000-seat performance hall, a smaller recital hall, recording studios, and other creative facilities. Jacksonville also hosts various art exhibitions, festivals, and community events, such as the Annual Calhoun County Community Art Show and Jacksonville's Fair on the Square, both dedicated to showcasing the diverse talents of local artists and makers across all skill levels and mediums.
