Through the streets of downtown Frederiksted, revelers adorned in dazzling sequins, shimmering feathers, and intricate headpieces move rhythmically, captivating onlookers with their exuberance. Among this sea of brilliance stands Shamari Haynes, whose striking appearance commands attention. Known for his iridescent attire and commanding presence, Haynes is not just another participant but a central figure in the festival's spectacle.

As the visionary behind Simply Sophisticated Fun Troupe, Haynes has been shaping the Carnival experience for over a decade. This troupe serves as a home base for participants during the festivities, providing them with essentials like food, drinks, and elaborate costumes that define the event's allure. The origins of Carnival trace back centuries to protests against colonial oppression, where enslaved people celebrated freedom through mocking attire. Today, characters such as the towering moko jumbie continue to embody this spirit of resistance and joy across the Caribbean islands. During this year's parade, I joined Simply Sophisticated and was struck by the diversity and inclusivity evident in Frederiksted's celebration, setting it apart from other regions.

As deputy commissioner of the US Virgin Islands tourism department and an openly queer individual, Haynes champions inclusivity within his troupe.
