This piece provides parents with practical advice on how to guide their teenagers in upholding their Christian faith amidst a rapidly changing cultural landscape. It focuses on fostering a deep understanding of biblical principles and developing the ability to articulate these beliefs with both conviction and compassion.

Cultivating Steadfast Faith in a Shifting World

Nurturing a Robust Christian Perspective in Adolescence

As parents, predicting every obstacle our adolescents will encounter is impossible. However, we can proactively prepare them to champion their Christian convictions with resilience, kindness, and modesty. Teenagers are constantly influenced by various sources, including entertainment, social media, friendships, educational environments, and even religious institutions. Rather than succumbing to apprehension about the complexities of modern culture, we should be cognizant of its impact on our children's spiritual outlook. Through daily interactions and thoughtful inquiries, we can help our teens seek divine truth and establish an unwavering foundation in a world that is always evolving.

The Crucial Role of Foundational Beliefs

Adolescence marks a significant phase where teenagers transition from passively accepting parental views to forming their own deeply held convictions. They engage in more profound introspection, pose challenging questions, and solidify their personal belief systems. They are immersed in a culture that often promotes compromise, dictating identities, values to celebrate or reject, and the consequences of non-conformity to secular perspectives. Therefore, it is imperative not to delay until a crisis arises to help our teenagers grasp the essence of their beliefs.

Unexpected Tests of Faith: A Personal Anecdote

When teenagers encounter pressure from peers, they require more than superficial answers; they need a faith firmly rooted in sacred texts. They must comprehend the teachings of divine scripture, appreciate its relevance, and learn how to respond when adherence to their faith demands sacrifice. We are guiding young individuals who need to understand their beliefs, the reasons behind them, and how to follow spiritual teachings when societal norms encourage compromise. It is not a matter of 'if' their convictions will be challenged, but 'when'. Such challenges can emerge from classroom discussions, social media, friendships, or even within family circles. Sometimes, as our family discovered, these tests can arise from the most unexpected quarters.

Proactive Dialogue: Strengthening Convictions Before Challenges Arise

A month prior to our son's senior prom, he encountered a significant ethical dilemma. He had to decide whether to uphold his convictions, risking negative repercussions, or remain silent to avoid confrontation. A female classmate intended to bring a former female student as her date to the prom. This former student, who identified as transgender, planned to wear a tuxedo. While some of our son's peers embraced this idea without reservation, he observed firsthand the pressure to align with prevailing cultural views on gender and identity. He recognized that affirming the situation would conflict with his Christian worldview, which posits that a higher power created distinct male and female identities. Our son sought our prayers, counsel, and guidance. We always knew our children would face moments requiring them to take a stand, but the context of this particular challenge took us by surprise. It wasn't within a public school setting; it occurred in a Christian educational institution. Despite attending a school that promoted a biblical worldview, some students had internalized cultural messages regarding gender, identity, and affection. They believed that a more compassionate response would involve affirming the former student's choices and permitting her to attend in attire that made her comfortable.

Fostering Graceful and Assertive Communication

Our son's experience underscored the critical importance of preparing teenagers before their faith is put to the test. We can support them by asking thought-provoking questions in advance that encourage biblical thinking, graceful expression, and unwavering resolve when their worldview is challenged. Here are some questions to initiate conversations with your teenager:

  • What do sacred texts reveal about this matter?
  • How does this align with our understanding of creation, fall, divine favor, truth, and redemption?
  • How can we demonstrate love to individuals without endorsing actions that contradict sacred teachings?
  • What might deter you from vocalizing your perspective?
  • How can one differentiate between valor and arrogance?
  • How can you express disagreement while still showing compassion?
  • Whom can you trust to discuss these pressures with?
  • What would it mean to honor higher principles through your words, demeanor, and actions?
  • How can we seek strength to speak boldly before challenging moments arrive?

Supporting Teens Through Post-Advocacy Reactions

We were grateful that our son approached us before engaging with his classmates. He was distressed and recognized the wisdom in stepping back to prevent escalation of emotions. Upholding truth never grants teenagers permission to be unkind, self-righteous, or cruel. However, they must also understand that demonstrating love does not necessitate silence or agreement with cultural trends. Encourage your teenager to communicate with humility, not pride; to be courageous, not confrontational. Grace means acknowledging the inherent worth of every individual and showing respect. Pride seeks to prove oneself right. Boldness prioritizes honoring higher principles, even at the risk of losing friendships. Confrontation aims to win an argument, potentially causing harm to the other person.

The Ultimate Objective: Faithful Adherence to Truth

After our son communicated his Christian perspective to his classmates, some reacted negatively. To them, his explanation seemed unloving towards the former student. Our son firmly believed that, as followers of a higher power, we are called to love all individuals while remaining steadfast in divine truth. Our son felt wounded by this classmate's response, yet he knew he had acted appropriately by adhering to his convictions. When teenagers take a stand and encounter backlash, they may experience anger, confusion, rejection, or isolation. Parents, at such times, it is crucial to actively listen to our teenagers rather than immediately attempting to solve their problems. This approach allows us to guide our teenagers, reminding them that their identity is not contingent on peer approval, but rather rooted in a higher purpose. I encourage you to create an environment where your teenager feels comfortable confiding in you. Take them for coffee, go for a drive, prepare their favorite meal (teenagers appreciate good food!), or simply sit with them at the kitchen table and ask:

  • What transpired?
  • How did that make you feel?
  • What do you wish you had expressed differently?
  • Where do you perceive divine assistance?

We can also help them assess their tone:

  • Did you speak with gentleness and kindness?
  • Did you treat the other person as someone created in a divine image?
  • Did you advocate for truth without trying to dominate the discussion?

Most importantly, pray with your teenager and remind them that adherence to higher principles is not always met with applause or widespread acclaim. Spiritual teachings often suggest that followers may not always be understood by the world, but they are also called to be a positive influence. Upholding truth will incur costs, but they do not face these challenges alone.

Defining Success in Upholding Beliefs

We cannot eliminate every difficult experience from our teenagers' lives, nor should we attempt to. However, we can (and must!) prepare them to understand their beliefs, the rationale behind them, and how to respond with both truth and compassion. The objective is not to raise teenagers who always win debates. The objective is to cultivate young adults who remain faithful to their spiritual path and advocate for biblical truth with courage, conviction, humility, and love.
