San Juan has officially re-established itself as a top-tier global cruise destination. Recently, Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas, an Oasis-class ship, made its inaugural call at Pier 3 after a substantial $10 million infrastructure upgrade. This pivotal project has restored San Juan's capability to host the largest cruise ships currently sailing and is paving the way for future visits from the cutting-edge Icon-class vessels.
The arrival of the Wonder of the Seas alone brought over 6,500 travelers and crew members to Old San Juan, generating an estimated $700,000 in local economic activity in a single day. Over the next five months, San Juan Cruise Port anticipates approximately 15 calls from similar mega-cruise ships. This influx is expected to create new avenues for growth across various local businesses, including merchants, tour operators, restaurants, and transportation services.
The extensive upgrades to Pier 3 were financed and managed by San Juan Cruise Port, an entity within the Global Ports Holding network, recognized as the largest cruise port operator globally. This project is a crucial component of a larger $52 million modernization initiative aimed at improving operational efficiency, increasing capacity, and cementing San Juan's status as both a primary homeport and a popular port of call. By enabling the pier to accommodate Oasis- and Icon-class ships, the San Juan Cruise Port has not only future-proofed its facilities but also enhanced Puerto Rico's competitive edge in the vibrant Caribbean tourism market.
The multi-phase transformation of Pier 3 involved meticulous engineering and close collaboration with regulatory bodies to meet the rigorous demands of servicing mega-ships. The initial phase focused on comprehensive structural evaluations to confirm Pier 3's capacity to bear the weight of the world's largest cruise vessels. This was followed by extensive dredging operations to achieve the necessary depth and draft for ships exceeding 200,000 gross tons. Furthermore, the port installed new and reinforced bollards to manage increased mooring forces and repaired or replaced mooring dolphins to enhance docking stability. The completion of a specially constructed platform, designed specifically for Icon-class ships, finalized this impressive renovation.
The financial advantages of these upgrades are both immediate and profound. Each visit from an Oasis-class ship brings thousands of passengers to Old San Juan, whose spending on dining, excursions, retail, and transportation directly supports local employment and enterprises. As cruise itineraries expand to incorporate the port's enhanced capabilities, San Juan Cruise Port foresees a sustained increase in both passenger volumes and ship arrivals. Clarivette Díaz, General Manager of San Juan Cruise Port, emphasized that the arrival of Wonder of the Seas underscores their commitment to bolstering San Juan's standing as a leading cruise destination. She highlighted that the Pier 3 enhancements, part of a comprehensive $52 million infrastructure program, have improved capacity, efficiency, and readiness to welcome the next generation of cruise ships, promising even greater benefits for Old San Juan and the broader Puerto Rican tourism industry.
